About us

Founded in 2001 by Theresa Lloyd, Philnathropy UK was a project within the Association of Charitable Foundations (ACF). The initial aim was to promote philanthropy by providing independent practical advice to potential donors; faciliating the sharing of good practice by encouraging networking amongst practitioners and researchers; and researching and documenting the motivations and concerns of donors.

During this time, Philanthropy UK published two seminal books: A Guide to Giving (1st Ed 2003) and Why Rich People Give (2004) by Theresa LLoyd.

ACF worked with an informal consortium of organisations to develop and foster a network for those interested in promoting new ideas about philanthropy. Charities Aid Foundation, Community Foundation Network, Impetus Trust, the Institute for Philanthropy, New Philanthropy Capital and Pilot Light were all part of this group.

In 2009, EAPG changed its name to European Association for Philanthropy and Giving.  An increased interest in the need for high-quality philanthropy advice enabled EAPG to take the lead in offering thought leadership on contemporary thinking on philanthropy, cross-border giving, and broadening the debate on technical and policy issues that encourage philanthropy and major charitable giving in the UK and beyond.

The Philanthropy Advisors Forum evolved from reserach undertaken in late 2009 by New Philanthropy Capital. As an informal group of professional philanthropy advisors, originally chaired by Dame Steve Shirley and subsequently chaired by Lord Janvrin, it offered attendees the chance to discuss issues in depth, share knowledge and network.

Philanthropy Impact incorporates Philanthropy UK (a project within the Association for Charitable Foundations, supported by grant funding from the Office of Civil Society managed by the Community Foundation Network), the European Association for Philanthropy and Giving (EAPG),  and Philanthropy Advisors Forum (PAF, an informal network of advisors based mainly in London).
