This event will focus on blended finance across the spectrum of medical research, how collaboration among organisations using diverse investment initiatives is helping to develop a new generation of entrepreneurial scientists.

Speakers at the event will include:

  • Professor Sir Mark Caulfield who has been instrumental in delivering the world-leading 100,000 Genomes Project, which hit its target of sequencing 100,000 whole genomes in 2018 and has already delivered life-changing results
  • Richard Ross, a philanthropist who will discuss funding basic science that generates further funding leading to major advances in medical treatment. He supports researchers who think ‘out of the box’ with a good chance of success
  • James Carleton, a lawyer who will share his experience in advising clients in their philanthropy, with a focus on medical research

The discussion will be facilitated by award-winning writer and broadcaster Vivienne Parry. A scientist by training, she hosts medical programmes for BBC Radio 4 and writes widely on health. She presented on Tomorrow’s World and Panorama, and was awarded the OBE in 2011 for “services to the public understanding of science”.

Chair: Vivienne Parry OBE, Science Writer and Broadcaster, Head of Engagement, Genomics England; Board Member, UK Research and Innovation

Discussion: Professor Sir Mark Caulfield FMedSci, Chief Executive, Genomics England and Co-Director, William Harvey Research Institute; Professor of Clinical Pharmacology at Queen Mary University of London
