Over 30 colleges in the United States have been given $10,000 by The Learning by Giving Foundation to allow students to learn about philanthropy and distribute the money to not for profit organisations.

For example, students on a course at the State University of New York (SUNY) Philanthropy and Civic Engagement: Teaching Students How to Give course are being taught philanthropic decision making. At the end of the course they are allowed to distribute $10,000 to four charities of their choice.

Louisa Frick, an international studies major enrolled in the course, says: “In other classes, we talk about what we would do or what we might do. In this class, we actually get to do something—something that’s really important.”

The Learning by Giving Foundation hopes to promote the study of philanthropy among college students. Other schools include University of California at Berkeley, Columbia University, and Stanford University.

The Foundation is run by Warren Buffett’s older sister, Doris, and her grandson, Alex Rozek. It has just launched a Massive Open Online Course (M.O.O.C.) on effective charitable giving for teams of people who want to make a difference in their local community.
