Active Philanthropy uses a new generation of communicators to promote giving

“What would you do with 20m Euros?”

That’s the question posed by an imaginary donor in the experimental video "Me, Myself & I", who promises to give the huge sum of money to those who will invest it effectively and sustainably – but how?

The video is one of 10 responses by students at the award-winning Berghs School of Communication in Stockholm, who were asked by Active Philanthropy, a Berlin-based practice, to offer solutions on how they would enhance giving and promote a more strategic culture of giving.

The aim was “to learn about fresh, new ideas to enhance giving that use video, social media and digital tools,” explains Michael Alberg-Seberich, managing partner at the not-for-profit that focuses on enhancing giving among business owning families in Europe.

We wanted to know from them how they would use their communication toolbox to promote giving. The videos, campaign concepts, games developed by the 10 student teams are thought provoking,” he adds.

The video demonstrates how difficult it is to give away money effectively.

“We want to use the video to promote the idea of giving but also to underline that there is a need to promote giving,” says Alberg-Seberich.

The video is hypothetical, but maybe this is the kind of campaign that we need to enhance giving? Asking the public what they would do (for themselves...for society) could be one answer to the US Giving Pledge of Warren Buffett and Bill Gates. Could people grasp the fun and the difficulties of giving through such a video? This is a student project. It is an idea. Nevertheless it will be interesting to see how people react to it. Maybe it is in the end a way to enhance giving in a connected world?

More of the creative solutions will be available to view at the Active Philanthropy website in the coming weeks.
