Charitable trust funds more than triple in 10 years, CAF reports

Funds held in charitable trusts by the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) rose more than three-fold over the past decade – from £47m in 1999/2000 to £143m last year, according to CAF’s year-end figures. The Foundation now manages 2,807 charitable trusts on behalf of individuals who want to set aside £10,000 or more to give to charity.

Payroll giving has also increased, it reports. Last year £81m was donated to charity by the half a million employees who give every month through the “Give As You Earn” scheme. This is an increase of 153% on 1999/2000 when £31m was given in this way.

Over 3,000 companies run a payroll giving scheme and many match the donations made, often doubling the amount that goes to their employees’ chosen charities.
