Greening of finance market planned by Conservatives

The Conservative party has plans to make London the world’s “undisputed leader in green finance” with its proposal to create the first trading market for green technology companies, reports the Financial Times.

A “Green Environmental Market” (GEM) has been suggested by George Osborne, shadow chancellor, with tax breaks and a light touch regulatory regime to encourage companies to list on the market.

This is a move that the Conservatives say “will help Britain meet its commitment to increase the use of renewable energy to 15% of total consumption by 2020 and to generate finance to fund British companies.”

GEM would sit alongside the Alternative Investment Market (AIM), and would enable investors to track and invest in green tech stocks in a simple way.  Osborne plans to launch a working group, comprising the London Stock Exchange, the Climate Exchange and business experts from the City, to take forward the policy.
