NSPCC aims to inspire next generation of philanthropists

News (UK)

Children’s charity NSPCC is piloting a free one-day workshop aimed at teen philanthropists.  ‘Future Giving: Will you be counted?' is aimed at young people aged 15-19.

NSPCC development manager Kellie Spooner says: “We hope the workshop will inspire young people to become active citizens and the next generation of philanthropists, whether that is through the giving of time, money or by influencing others.”

This pilot comes hot on the heels of two other initiatives to engage young people in philanthropy. Pears Foundation has recently given £200,000 each to The Institute for Philanthropy’s Youth and Philanthropy Initiative (YPI) and Citizenship Foundation’s Go Givers programme, to encourage young people to become philanthropists.

The NSPCC course has been designed in collaboration with a consultant on global and community education Annabel Smith. Participants will gain an overview of the sector, contribute to discussions and interact in activities around responsible grant making with other charities. They will also hear from NSPCC’s volunteers and learn how their skills can make a difference to local and global communities.

The workshop will look at why people give both time and money to a wide range of causes; what motivates philanthropy; why giving is so vital to the sector and how philanthropy shapes the world around us.

Spooner adds: “Our future is very much intertwined with the nature of modern philanthropy and our services, such as ChildLine, are reliant on philanthropic volunteers.”

The one day workshop will take place on 2 April 2012 at the ChildLine office in Folgate Street, London.
