High street discount store Poundland has raised £100,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support four months earlier than planned, presenting a cheque to the charity this week.

Poundland joined forces with Macmillan Cancer Support at the start of its financial year in April and committed to raising the target figure in 12 months to help improve the lives of people affected by cancer.  Staff have taken part in fundraising events and customers have donated across its 250 stores.

The company announced that it will continue supporting Macmillan as its chosen charity of the year for 2010-2011.

Jim McCarthy, chief executive at Poundland, said: “We are delighted to have reached our target so quickly and I look forward to seeing what our final total is for the year. We’re all excited at the prospect of continuing this successful partnership with Macmillan Cancer Support, as the link has proven very popular [with customers and staff] .”

The charity will be promoted at all future store openings to encourage donations.
