Support for charities may adapt in 2009

Despite a looming recession, people will continue to support charities in 2009, but in different ways, according to a new survey.

A poll of internet users from across the UK revealed that 32% are more likely to support charities with time rather than money in a recession. The poll also showed that 41% of people would still prefer to donate money, although 27% of respondents said that they do not give to charities.

Kevin Slatter, managing director of G2 Data Dynamics, who carried out the survey, said people are, “Considering cutting back on regular financial donations to charity as they tighten their belts – but there are other ways they can help.”

Scotland appeared to be the most generous region with only 19% saying they did not give anything to charity. Overall, women were more likely to say they would donate both time and money. More than 50% of those with an income of over £50,000 said they would donate money.

A previous survey by G2 Data Dynamics suggested that consumers, when faced with financial concerns, do not necessarily cut support for charities before other spending.
