SOS MEDITERRANEE

SOS MEDITERRANEE is an independent European civilian organisation founded in 2015 by civil society actors in response to repeated loss of life along the Central Mediterranean route, one of the world’s most dangerous sea crossings for people seeking safety. The organisation conducts maritime search and rescue operations and independent monitoring of humanitarian and legal conditions at sea, in line with international maritime law. Its work is structured around three pillars: saving lives at sea, protecting the people rescued, and bearing witness. Since 2016, SOS MEDITERRANEE has assisted and rescued more than 42,000 people.
